It is just as much your interview as theirs. Make sure to have questions about the role and the company. Part of preparing for an interview is researching the companies you are interviewing with. Show through conversation that you are ready to grow your career. You want to make sure that you come across as comfortable and confident in your skills. It may have been a while since you had a conversation with someone over the age of 5! Interviewing is a learned skilled, so the more you practice the more prepared you will be. The important thing is to let people know you are seeking a position.ħ. Take former colleagues out to lunch to find out what is new in the industry or see if they know of any current openings. But don’t forget about the network of people you already know. If you already have a well built profile and number of connections then spread the word that you are looking for a job! LinkedIn is also a good tool for learning about a company that you may be interested in working for. You can find jobs posted here and even apply through this social site (this is how I found my current job). Many companies use this as a huge recruitment source. If you have not joined LinkedIn then do it now! This is the number one professional online networking website. It is a good idea to look over some job descriptions that you are interested in and learn those skills even if it means you need to take some classes at the local library or community college.Ħ. Computer skills are important, so before listing these skills on your resume make sure you brush up on then. Once you may have been an expert at Excel but when was the last time you opened a spreadsheet. While updating your resume you may need to consider some skills that are important but you haven’t used in years. You could list them as “Consulting Projects.” Find a way to give yourself credit for all the unpaid work you did.ĥ. You may have even organized activity groups. But most likely you have spent time volunteering at schools or nonprofits. If you have been away from work for a while then you will have a gap in your work experience. And this new perspective makes you strive for success in a way you never imagined!Ĥ. Take the opportunity and prove yourself! Before you know it you will be moving up the ladder quicker than before because you have a new perspective than you did before you had kids. This is just a small setback in your journey to rebuild your career. Be prepared to take a lower position and salary than what you were used to prior to having kids. You can learn about the culture of a company fairly easy through some social media researching.ģ. See if they are understanding of emergency situations that may require unexpected time off. When you interview make sure to ask questions about the other employees family to find out how many people have children. Find a company that appreciates motherhood and supports family-life. My first attempt at going back to work after my first child was in this type of environment and it made for very long days. There is nothing worse than going back to work and being made to feel like your children do not exist. Just be confident in your unpaid work accomplishments.Ģ. Your ability to balance budgets, manage multiple schedules, and mediate disputes in a calm manner are just a few examples that are of great benefit to an employer. You most likely do not even realize all the daily tasks that are valuable skills for the workplace. The work you have done as a stay at home mom should not go unnoticed. Whether it has been a few years or maybe a decade since you have entered the work force here is a list of tips to get you going in the right direction.ġ. You may even feel like you don’t know where to start. And you have every right to be nervous about it. We all have the same goal in mind- providing a great childhood full of opportunity for our kids! Every mom knows that being a mommy is a 24 hour a day job regardless of where you are. And don’t let anyone make you regret your decision whether you stay at home full-time, part time or work full time.
